PHOTO EXHIBITION ABOUT NOWA HUTA

Robert Werbanow is a philologist, journalist and photographer. He photographs what is closest and familiar - people, landscapes, animals. For him, photography is a form of reportage - it captures fragments of time in the frame, illustrations to an ongoing story. He has already presented, among others: exhibitions "Lemkowyna", "Provincial Miracles", "Another World".

Now he focused on Nowa Huta. The photos are full of reflection, insight and contemplation, probably not by accident. Robert Werbanow came to Nowa Huta somewhat out of compulsion, he is a patient of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center.

I could observe how important the pursuit of passion, curiosity and the desire to create can be in therapy. Oncological treatment is a huge challenge for every patient. Without the will to live and faith in recovery, it is sometimes difficult to get through it. The need to carry out a certain project can give you additional energy and strength, and if it concerns artistic activities, this drive becomes even stronger. Maybe we should issue recipes for creating art? I am extremely grateful to Mr. Robert for allowing me to participate in the creation of this exhibition – says the doctor. Mariusz Pietrasz, MD, a specialist in oncological radiation therapy, whose patient is the author of the exhibition.

"My discovery of Nowa Huta" - the opening of Robert Werbanow's exhibition will take place on March 16 at 18.00 p.m. at the Cultural Center. CK Norwida, os. Górali 5, Kraków. The exhibition will be on view there until April 22. Later, from April 27 to May 10, the photos will be presented at the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center.

MORE AND MORE MODERN TREATMENTS

The Amethyst Radiotherapy Center celebrates its two-year anniversary. The number of treated patients and the most modern irradiation techniques used are systematically growing: in the three quarters of this year (compared to this period in 2014), the number of stereotaxy procedures increased more than fourfold, the number of brachytherapy procedures increased threefold, and the number of procedures using the VMAT technique increased sevenfold.

The Krakow center already functions effectively as an important element of the Małopolska health care system. The number of patients undergoing radiotherapy is systematically growing - this year, one patient underwent it in every quarter an average of 457 patients, while in the best in this respect, the last quarter of 2014, it was 398 people. In the three quarters of this year, 1372 people underwent radiotherapy, compared to 1050 in the entire last year. The proportion of advanced radical treatment technologies (aimed at permanent recovery of the patient) to the number of palliative irradiation treatments has changed significantly. In the first months of the Center's operation, palliative radiotherapy was used in half of the cases, now the average is 34%. all treatments performed. Currently, the vast majority of them (43% on average per quarter) is the VMAT technique. Throughout 2014, 216 patients underwent such treatment at the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center, and in the three quarters of this year already 592 persons (in the comparable period last year there were only 77 patients, i.e. seven times less).

PATIENTS FROM UKRAINE ARE TREATED IN KRAKOW

The number of Ukrainians working and studying in our country is growing. In 2016, the Małopolska Voivodeship Office was in second place in terms of the number of incoming cases regarding the legalization of stay and work permits for foreigners (mainly from Ukraine) - over 13,3 thousand cases were reported. applications, which is an increase of over 100%. Medical services at a Western level and the proximity of centers make Małopolska medical facilities an attractive alternative for citizens from across the eastern border.

From the beginning of its operation, the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center, which closely cooperates with the Specialist Hospital. L. Rydygier, several people from Ukraine underwent treatment here. They have access to doctors of various specialties, just like patients from Poland. With sick foreigners in mind, the center has prepared leaflets in Ukrainian and translated documents, and also provides patients with translator assistance and finding a place to stay for the duration of radiotherapy treatments.

NEW FACILITY IN THE AMETHYST RADIOTHERAPY NETWORK

The international Amethyst Radiotherapy network is expanding its activities in Europe. The two centers in France were joined by a third one, in La Garenne-Colombes.

It operates on the premises of the Clinique Lambert hospital belonging to Ramsay Generale de Sante, one of the largest French networks of private hospitals. In 2014, almost 1200 patients underwent treatment in three local departments: radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy. The Amethyst La Garenne-Colombes center employs a medical team consisting of 26 specialists, including eight renowned specialists in oncology and oncological radiation therapy.

Thanks to the inclusion of La Garenne-Colombes in the network of facilities, the Amethyst Radiotherapy medical team in France has increased to 60 cancer specialists. The medical and scientific activities of the three French centers are coordinated by Prof. Jean Marc Cosset, who is also honorary chairman of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology of the Curie Institute in Paris.

DIFFICULTIES IN CONTACTING BY TELEPHONE

In Białołęka near Warsaw, on the morning of January 31, there was a great fire. The hall burned down, and the fire also affected buildings belonging to the telecommunications company T-Mobile. This results in serious difficulties in access to telecommunications and Internet services in this network. The failure affected the operation of telephones at the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center in Kraków and the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center in Zgorzelec. We apologize to all those who were unable to reach our telephone numbers. We have no influence on the course of this failure, which affects the entire country. In urgent matters, please contact us directly on site.

FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION OF THE AMETHYST RADIOTHERAPY CENTER

It was an intense and important 12 months. Here is a summary of the first year of operation of the Amethys Radiotherapy Center.

The beginnings were not easy: the Center team together with the staff of the hospital. Rydygiera developed and implemented a system of multi-specialist teams, and in addition, the contract from the National Health Fund for the provision of medical services came only three months after the center's opening. However, the challenges have a motivating effect - the Center operates efficiently, has successfully joined the activities of the Polish health service, and over 3 people received advice and consultations here.

The first year of operation of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center in brief:

  • over 1500 registered patients from all over Małopolska,
  • 1029 people qualified for treatment, of which 958 people completed radiotherapy,
  • 466 patients who underwent modern procedures (stereotaxis, VMAT),
  • 9 interdisciplinary teams dealing with various types of cancer,
  • The Amethyst Radiotherapy Center is the first center in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship that started treating patients using a dynamic technique such as VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy).

INDIVIDUALIZATION OF ONCOLOGICAL TREATMENT

Fighting cancer requires each time to create a separate strategy and design therapy tailored to each patient. This is particularly important in the treatment of head and neck cancers, emphasize doctors from the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center in Krakow.

Cancers of the head and neck region constitute approximately 6%. all malignant tumors diagnosed in Poland. Some might think that this is not much based on this data, but nothing could be further from the truth. At the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Specialist Hospital. Rydygier in Krakow, a few years ago, the largest group of patients were those with various head injuries, but now oncological diseases have definitely come to the fore. Several hundred cancer patients are treated here every year, as many as 70 percent of them are malignant tumors.  Most of them also go to the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center, which cooperates closely with the Specialist Hospital in Krakow. In 2020, the Amethyst Center treated 275 patients with head and neck cancer, which constitutes almost 10%. all patients undergoing radiotherapy here.

A surgeon and a radiotherapist

The degree of complexity of the anatomy of the head and neck region requires a multidisciplinary approach and appropriate organization. In this case, all available treatment methods are used, such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Today, there is no single effective therapy. Doctors use all possibilities related to combining all types of oncological treatment. In the case of tumors in the head and neck, their location affects whether they will first be surgically removed or whether doctors will use radiotherapy or chemotherapy as the first stage of therapy. In this case, consultations, i.e. consultations with a multi-disciplinary team of doctors dealing with cancer treatment in a given location, are a real brainstorming session.

Radiotherapy of cancers in this region uses not only teletherapy, i.e. irradiation of the patient from a certain distance using linear accelerators, but also brachytherapy. In this method, the radiation source is placed directly in the patient's body. This is done in various ways - using existing body cavities and using special applicators - plastic tubes or needles placed in the tumor. A radiotherapist often participates in the surgical procedure to install the applicators necessary for brachytherapy on the patient during the procedure.

Concentrate the radiation dose

Brachytherapy makes it possible to administer a large dose of radiation with great precision directly to the cancerous lesion, which increases the chance of cure with a relatively low risk of complications. This is particularly important in the case of head and neck cancer, where many vital organs are located, such as the salivary glands and the pharyngeal constrictor muscle, which, after receiving a high dose of radiation necessary to cure the cancer, may lose their functionality, and this is such a key issue. for the patient, such as the ability to swallow and thus eat, which may lead to significant exhaustion of the patient and even his death because of this – says Marta Urbańska-Gąsiorowska, a radiotherapist from the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center in Krakow.

Modern research clearly indicates the effectiveness of combined, interdisciplinary treatment in the treatment of cancer. High doses of irradiation combined with simultaneous chemotherapy provide a greater chance for local cure. Unfortunately, not every patient can undergo such intensive therapy, which is caused not only by poor health related to cancer, but also to other comorbidities. In such cases, the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center uses many solutions that allow for safe intensification of treatment.

To compensate for the inability to administer simultaneous chemotherapy, hyperfractionation is used, during which the patient is irradiated twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. Particular effects can be achieved by combining teleradiotherapy and brachytherapy, which allows for a significant increase in the radiation dose in the tumor itself or in the place after its removal. In a situation where there are contraindications to surgery to remove the tumor, the use of brachytherapy in low-advanced head and neck cancers provides comparable therapeutic results with a very good aesthetic effect. This method is also addressed to patients with recurrence of cancer in a previously irradiated area, if surgical resection is not possible.

Treatment is also increasingly supported by immunotherapy. Thanks to the use of appropriate drugs, the patient's immune system is activated to fight cancer. The Amethyst Radiotherapy Center conducts clinical tests of drugs that affect the immune system.

For the sake of patients' quality of life

In the case of head and neck cancer therapy, a major challenge is to control complications and provide patients with a satisfactory quality of life after the disease and its treatment. Therapy may disrupt basic life functions related to the ability to eat, speak or hear. Moreover, patients are afraid of scars and other changes that directly affect their appearance.

When planning radiation therapy to the head and neck, it is necessary to protect critical organs such as the salivary glands, pharyngeal sphincter, and oral cavity. Saliva is essential for formulating a food bite. Dry mouth is a common side symptom during radiotherapy. However, it is important to minimize these effects and ensure that the salivary glands return to proper functioning after completion of radiotherapy.

– Effective therapy may be a big challenge for the patient. Patients lose weight and may become more susceptible to infections. As doctors, we must pay a lot of attention to guide the patient through this difficult process. Sometimes, eating disorders are so serious that we use the so-called industrial nutrition administered through a special enteral tube. In some patients, this type of nutrition is used even before the start of treatment, due to the initial limitation of oral food intake – explains Marta Urbańska-Gąsiorowska.

From the very beginning, when a patient comes to the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center, he is under the care of a dietitian who gives him instructions on how to eat and take care of himself. Before the therapy begins, the patient usually has some time to change his eating habits, nourish himself properly and hydrate his body. This is very important, because such "supplies" may turn out to be crucial during the difficulties of therapy. During the entire treatment process, the patient's weight is monitored. If it falls, quick remedial steps are taken.

Another extremely important aspect of treatment is working with a psycho-oncologist. Most patients and their families require such support, and often pharmacological therapy. Studies have proven that low mood or depression worsen the results of cancer therapy.

Observing our patients, we see how important good eating habits and support from family and medical staff are. If the patient takes care of himself, is involved in his therapy, it is easier for him to undergo it and he has a greater chance of recovery – points out Marta Urbańska-Gąsiorowska.

SUMMARY OF THE HALF-YEAR OF 2015

The first half of the year was very busy for the staff of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center.

From January to the end of June 2015, 913 patients completed radiotherapy, while in the comparable period a year earlier there were 356, i.e. almost three times less. Nearly half a thousand people (484 to be precise) were treated with modern techniques, such as IMRT, VMAT or stereotaxy, and in the first half of 2014, 71 patients underwent such treatments.

The Amethyst Radiotherapy Center is a pioneer in Małopolska in the context of highly specialized radiation techniques - it was the first center in this province to start treating patients with a dynamic technique such as VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy). It is also the only place in the region where stereotactic radiotherapy, also known as radiosurgery, is currently performed. In the first half of this year 55 patients underwent treatment with this method, including ten - cerebral stereotaxy.

In total, in the first half of 2015  Center doctors provided 3150 advice and consultations, 243 patients were hospitalized and 913 completed treatment. In June this year. 177 people completed treatment (the highest number in all of 2015), a similar number is also expected this month.

THE ART OF HELPING

How to help effectively? How to help to make others independent? Where to find the inner strength to help? Can we better help others because of our failures? These questions are familiar to therapists, psychologists, nurses, doctors, teachers and all people who professionally specialize in supporting others. We increasingly look at this issue from a holistic perspective, looking for solutions in alternative trends in modern psychology.

The Amethyst Radiotherapy Center is one of the co-organizers of the "Art of Helping" seminar, which he will lead Gunter Schricker, a world-famous therapist and lecturer associated with Bert Hellinger's systemic settings, a supervisor with TZI and NLP master therapeutic licenses. He trains, among others: therapists, teachers and doctors from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Poland. He has been a lecturer for many years at the European Academy of System Settings (Eurasys) and at the Bert Hellinger School (Sciencia).

The seminar will take place on Friday, March 20 this year. in the auditorium of the Multispecialty Hospital. L. Rydygiera, Złota Jesieni housing estate 1 in Krakow. As part of the seminar, an open lecture will be held from 12.00 to 14.00. To take part, you must pay PLN 50 to the account of the Medicea Foundation.

TO CARE FOR THE PROPER NUTRITION OF PATIENTS

The Amethyst Radiotherapy Center subsidizes hot meals for patients from outside Krakow staying in a hotel during treatment. This is another element of ensuring a nutritious diet for people undergoing irradiation and preventing dangerous malnutrition.

As part of the oncology package, the National Health Fund covers the costs of accommodation for visiting patients (who do not require XNUMX-hour care in the hospital and can stay overnight in a hotel or guesthouse) and medical care (check visits by a nurse twice a day). However, this benefit does not include meals - patients pay for them out of their own pocket. It happens that as a result they save on food, which in the case of cancer patients can have very dangerous consequences.

Therefore, in order to provide patients with at least one warm, nutritious meal a day, the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center has signed an agreement with a catering company that delivers lunches to the hotel for patients. Once a week, patients declare whether they want to use ready-made dinners and how many meals they intend to order. They pay PLN 5 for one lunch, and the rest is covered by the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center. Currently, over 70 percent patients from outside Krakow who stay overnight in a hotel decide to buy a hot meal.
