World Cancer Day (World Cancer Day) we celebrate 4 February. The holiday was established in 2000 during the World Cancer Summit in Paris. The meeting adopted the Paris Charter, under which the governments of the countries that signed it committed to create programs to prevent and treat cancer. World Cancer Day is an important opportunity to express symbolic solidarity with cancer patients who fight this difficult disease on a daily basis. It can also encourage each of us to reflect on taking care of our health, prevention and check-ups. Many studies prove that through a healthy lifestyle and everyday choices, we can reduce the risk of many diseases, including cancer. It is worth thinking about the future now to enjoy a healthy life as long as possible.

Obesity, smoking and lack of exercise are important factors that increase the risk of developing cancer. The risk of developing cancer increases proportionally as the amount of fat in the body increases. Maintaining a healthy weight is therefore crucial to health.

By making the right dietary choices, you can significantly reduce the risk of cancer and many chronic diseases. A diet rich in plant-based foods, whole grains and legumes provides the body with the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants necessary to maintain good health. Limit your alcohol consumption. Abstinence helps prevent cancer.

The relationship between physical activity and health and reducing the risk of developing many types of cancer has been well documented in scientific research. Regular exercise reduces the risk of breast, prostate, lung, colon and digestive cancer. Reducing the risk of cancer is directly proportional to the level of physical activity.

Movement is health - this saying is true at any age and in any health condition. A dose of 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week, has a preventive effect. It's even better for your health if you can find time for physical exercise five times a week. The health benefits are immediate and it's never too late to start making changes to your lifestyle. Physical activity does not have to involve practicing any sport. It's worth walking instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of using the elevator, starting the day with a few stretching exercises or signing up for a Nordic walking course.

Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and do not use solariums.

The 5th edition of the nationwide educational campaign "Beat Cancer" published by Medical Media Solutions is held under the slogan "Build your immunity". The publication opens with a statement by Prof. Ph.D. Jacek Fijuth, President of the Polish Oncological Society, who explains why the growing incidence of cancer is a great challenge for all of us and why we should know as much as possible about proper prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Among the specialists speaking in this publication is also Dr. Marcin Hetnał, director of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center. He talks about brachytherapy, which gives very good results in the case of head and neck, skin and prostate cancer. In the case of the latter, it is an alternative to difficult surgical removal.

Data obtained by Gazeta Krakowska shows that the decrease in cancer patients treated in recent months is as much as 40%.

“The number of first-time consultations at oncology clinics in Małopolska dropped from 1353 in March 2019 to 877 in March 2020. The data for April are even worse. Last year, in April, there were 1283 consultations, but this year only 577.” – writes Patrycja Dziadosz.

Gazeta Krakowska's findings are consistent with what is happening at the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center. In April 2019, 220 patients started radiotherapy here, compared to only 2020 in April 139. The decline is related to the state of the epidemic, although there are several reasons for it. Patients with already diagnosed cancer may have had problems with undergoing diagnostic tests or their planned surgeries may have been postponed. Another part of the patients was not diagnosed at all, because primary care clinics had been operating mainly by telephone consultations since March. This could limit the detection of disturbing symptoms and delay diagnosis. Added to this is the fear of many people before visiting a clinic or hospital. People were afraid of getting infected with the coronavirus, so they postponed all contacts with health care.

– Oncological therapy is a life-saving treatment. It cannot be interrupted, postponed or abandoned, even in such a difficult situation as the coronavirus epidemic. Oncology hospitals have introduced all safety procedures to admit patients. Under no circumstances should you wait. Stopping the process of cancer diagnosis and treatment may lead to disastrous consequences in the form of a decreasing chance of curing cancer - he emphasized in Gazeta Krakowska Marcin Hetnał, MD, PhD, medical director of the Center Radiotherapy Amethyst.

The weekly Medical Magazine is a program presenting the diagnosis and treatment of diseases carried out in medical facilities in Lesser Poland. The episode aired yesterday (Monday, July 23) at 9.25 was devoted to the treatment of prostate cancer. It is one of the most common malignant tumors in men: in Europe it is the third cause of cancer deaths, in Poland it is second only to lung cancer in terms of incidence.

Materials for the mentioned episode were recorded, among others, at the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center, and among the specialists discussing the topic was Dr. Marcin Hetnał, director of the Center. He talked about the use of teleradiotherapy and brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer. Robert Maślankowski, operational director of the Center, discussed treatment standards in the Krakow center.
