ONCOLOGY FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
He is the subject director Marcin Hetnał, MD, PhD, medical director of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center. – We familiarize students with the philosophy of oncology, we want them to know how to manage a patient suspected of having cancer, how to treat a patient with complications after oncological therapy. – emphasizes Dr. Hetnał.
The course, held in the summer semester, is its second edition. The first one took place in the fall semester. In the context of the constantly increasing incidence of cancer, it is particularly important to prepare future doctors to work with oncological patients. In total, in the 2020/2021 academic year, over 90 medical students of the Krakow Academy of Oncology and Palliative Care graduated. Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski.
In the summer semester, representatives of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center also prepared special workshops as part of the course Advanced communication methods. A 3-hour workshop conducted for 10 groups of medical students of the Krakow Academy. Frycz Modrzewski concerned communication with the patient. In addition to doctors from the Amethyst Radiotherapy Center, psychologist Katarzyna Nowak-Ledniowska and invited actors participated in the preparation of these classes.
The ability to communicate effectively and establish relationships with patients are key skills of a doctor. Meanwhile, they are still overlooked in medical education. Conducted at the Krakow Academy Advanced communication methods fill this gap.
